The safety car was initially called out after Magnussen lost the back end at the top of the notorious Eau Rogue corner, spinning around helplessly before slamming into the tyre wall at high speed.
Although Magnussen was able to walk away from the carnage, he was later taken to hospital with an ankle injury.
Replays showed his headrest flying off the Renault as his car smashed into the tyre wall.
The Renault suffered extensive damage.
Renault confirmed Magnussen was fine after he was pictured walking away from the car but the red flag came out to halt the race as the tyre wall was damaged so badly.
"He left the car unaided and was taken to the medical centre for precautionary checks. He is fully conscious and responsive," said a Renault statement.
"He has a small cut to the left ankle and has been escorted to a nearby hospital for further routine checks."
The race subsequently restarted, with Lewis Hamilton having worked his way up to fifth place despite starting in 21st. Nico Rosberg was leading for Mercedes.
